Our Class Homework Policy
We normally have homework each night, Monday through Thursday. There is seldom weekend homework, other than to always look through blue Friday Folders for important papers and sign the Weekly Passport. The signed passport is due back on Monday, inside the Friday Folder. Please be sure to look over all graded papers and rework any errors with your child. For nightly homework assignments, your child should always try the work alone first and then have you look over it to see if he/she is understanding it. IT IS DEFINITELY OKAY for you to help your child rework any errors or help with homework, if needed. You are your child's "Free Private Tutor". If your child was absent, all papers will be saved in the Red Emergency Folder on the child's desk when he/she returns. Any classwork or homework missed should be made up by the end of the week.
TONIGHT's HOMEWORK - read and initial Homework Agenda
READING - Read for 15-20 minutes each night from the Book Baggy. In the rare case that is not available, students may read from their library books, Science or Soc. St. textbook, or book of choice. Parents have received an introductory letter suggesting ways to help your child improve reading through this nightly process. Students may read silently or read aloud to parent. Parents are encouraged to read parts of the assignment to their child, as well. The book should be read again each night. There will sometimes be a written assignment in reading in the pocket of your child's binder.
SPELLING - For the current list of words and target skills, see the Homework Agenda each week under "THIS WEEK'S SPELLING LIST".
Monday: write words 1-5, five times each. Tuesday: write words 6-10, five times each, on the back of Monday's paper. Wednesday: ABC Order, with parent help if needed. Thursday: signed "Practice Test". Parent calls out the words, using the list in the weekly Homework Agenda, like giving a test. Student writes words. Parent & student should then check words together. If a word is missed, student should write that word 10 times on the back of the paper. Parents please sign the Practice Test when it is completed. There is a quiz on Fridays.
MATH - Our math homework is a review of a skill your child has done before. See daily Homework Agenda for each day's assignment. Parents - please have your child attempt the homework on their own, first. Then glance over it to be sure they are understanding the concept. You may always help them rework anything they have missed, as homework is for practicing and reinforcing the skills we cover at school. Remember that you are your child's "Free Private Tutor", so feel free to help them when needed.
Snack - Sunday through Thursday nights at home: pack a healthy, non-perishable snack in the bookbag for the next day. A small serving is appropriate. Please, no family-size bags at school. You can place a single serving into a zip plastic bag or container.
Sneakers for PE: If PE is our next day's Special, be sure to wear sneakers to school. (The PE day follows Science day.) I tell students to set their sneakers out the night before they go to bed. No time to change after we get to school.
Thursday is Media Center day. On Wednesday nights, pack up library books to turn in the next day.
Friday: Sign Passport sheet and pull out all graded papers to go over at home. Please rework, sign, and return any papers with a D or U grade. These will usually have "Please sign_________________" on it to remind you. Other graded papers are for you to keep. Friday Folders & Signed Passports are due Monday.
